Modal Verbs
Assalamualaikum warrahmatullahi wabarakatuh
Dear fellow English teachers, kali ini kita akan membahas tentang Modal Verbs.
Apa sih Modal Verbs itu? Mungkin banyak dari murid-murid kita yang bertanya
mengapa belajar Grammar khususnya Modal Verbs. Modal Verbs adalah adalah salah
satu Auxiliary Verbs yang menambahkan atau memodifikasi makna dari apa yang
kita sampaikan baik secara lisan maupun tulisan.
Sebagai contoh kalimat:
“My mom cooks”
Akan berbeda maknanya dengan kalimat:
“My mom can cook”
Sebelum kita membahas satu per satu Modal Verb-nya, kita akan lihat terlebih
dahulu aturan-aturan yang berlaku dalam pemakaian Modal Verbs dalam Bahasa
Inggris.
1. Infinitive comes after modal but
without 'to'
Kata kerja yang mengikuti Modal Verbs adalah kata kerja infinitive tapi tanpa
‘to’
Yang benar adalah ‘I will go’ buka ‘I will to go’
2. Modal verbs take no 's' in the third
person singular
Pada subjek-subjek orang ketiga tunggal yaitu He, She, dan It, tidak seperti
dalam kalimat yang menyatakan kegiatan sehari-hari yang menggunakan Present
Tense, kata kerja yang digunakan dengan Modal Verbs, tidak perlu ditambahkan
-s (plays) -es (watches) atau -ies (studies)
Kalimat SALAH
‘My mom will arrives at 7’
Kalimat yang BENAR
‘My mom will arrive at 7’
3. In negative sentences, add 'not'
after the modal verbs
Seperti auxiliary verbs lainnya, Ketika kita menggunakan modal verbs dalam
kalimat negatif, maka tinggal tambahkan kata ‘not’ setelah modal verb -nya.
‘You should not wear black on this sunny day’
Kita dapat menyingkat modal verbs + not kecuali untuk may
Must + not Mustn’t
May + not May not
Might + not Mightn’t
Will + not Won’t
Would + not Wouldn’t
Can + not Cannot/Can’t
Could + not Couldn’t
Shall + not Shan’t
Should + not Shouldn’t
4. In interrogative sentences 'modal
verb + subject + verb'
Lagi-lagi, seperti auxiliary verbs lainnya, dalam kalimat tanya, modal verbs
berpindah posisi dari setelah subjek, menjadi sebelum subjek.
‘Can I help you?’
‘Will you marry me?’
‘What should I do?’
Ada Sembilan modal verbs dalam
Bahasa Inggris, untuk memudahkan menghapalnya, kitab isa menyingkatnya
menjadi:

5. Would
Polite asking for help

Invitation//Preferences/Desire
Would you like apple or orange juice?
I would like a cup of tea
Conditional typr 2 (imagining something)
I would buy an island if I were a crazy rich
6. Can

7. Could
